SUMMARY:Early Spring Concert 2022
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 the Hickory Choral Society joined 17 other choirs from around the country to commission a new choral piece from Norwegian-American composer Ola Gjeilo. The result\, “Roots\,” is a folk music-like setting of a new text by Charles Anthony Silvestry. The lyrics\, including lines such as “where love is strong and roots grow deep\,” “far have I traveled from my former home\,” and “reminding me where I belonged” inspired the programming for our March 20 Early Spring Concert. The concert will highlight the theme of “home” with special emphasis on local music education and composers. \nThis concert will also highlight the music of two hometown composers and former music educators. J. Jerome (Jim) Williams and James Gossler amassed a combined 57 years teaching music at East Burke and Freedom High Schools\, respectively. Their compositions have been sung by choirs throughout the state and country. Renee Shatley\, a former student of Jim Williams\, will conduct “Ye People of God\,” and “Sing Hallelujah.” James Gossler and Dr. Ryan Luhrs share ties to Florida State and Lenoir-Rhyne Universities\, and Dr. Luhrs will have the privilege of conducting his settings of “Auld Lang Syne” and “A Gaelic Goodnight.” \nThe concert’s music and texts will also explore the theme of “home” from multiple angles. The program will open with Z. Randall Stroope’s setting of “Homeland” and then explore home as a place of restoration and belonging through Stephen Paulus’s “The Road Home” and Gjeilo’s “Roots.” The next set will feature Moses Hogan’s arrangement of “We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace\,” Gabriel Faure’s “In Paradisum\,” and a new setting of “Bound for the Promised Land” by Greenville\, SC composer Shelton Ridge Love\, as the choir considers heaven as home. \nPrior to the Gossler/Williams final set\, the choir will examine home as a place of love and peace through William Billings’s “I am the Rose of Sharon\,” Dan Forrest’s “Shalom\,” and Daniel Gawthrop’s “Sing Me to Heaven.” It’s my hope that the overall program has a little bit of something for everybody as we celebrate our hometown music educators and composers. I invite you to join us Sunday\, March 20\, 3 PM at Corinth Reformed Church. \nArtistic Director Dr. Ryan Luhrs will share the podium with four HCS singers who are also music educators\, including Justin Johnson (South Caldwell High School)\, Jessica Cockroft; (Hickory High School)\, Grant Logan (St. Stephen’s High School)\, and Renee Shatley (Lenoir-Rhyne University and\, formerly\, Draughn High School\, East Burke High School). \n

DESCRIPTION:The Hickory Choral Society Fall Concert has been rescheduled for Sunday\, October 24 at 5 PM Under the Sails on Union Square in Downtown Hickory. This concert was originally scheduled for September 26 and was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. \nClick here to open the program book. \nSelections\nThe concert titled “Walking Together” will open with André Thomas’s “I Hear America Singing.” The original text and tune celebrate our return to in-person singing. The selection also includes the African American Spiritual “Walk Together\, Children\,” a title and conviction that inspired the concert’s programing. Other selections tied to the walking/journeying/travel theme in the mostly-pops program include “Walking on Sunshine\,” “Just a Closer Walk With Thee\,” “Chattanooga Choo-Choo\,” “On the Atchison\, Topeka and the Santa Fe\,” and “Don’t Stop Believing\,” the number-one hit by the band Journey. The concert will also highlight “togetherness” through the performance of popular music and Broadway tunes with inspiring messages such as “Wind Beneath My Wings\,” “You Raise Me Up\,” “You Will Be Found” (from Dear Evan Hanson)\, “What a Wonderful World\,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water\,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (from Carousel).  The United Arts Council of Catawba County and the City of Hickory are concert sponsors.

SUMMARY:Virtual Late Spring Mini Concert
DESCRIPTION:As the Hickory Choral Society continues to navigate choral singing in a pandemic\, we’ve remained focused on what we can do to fulfill our mission of bringing quality choral music to the region and beyond. Although we are eager to resume in-person music making\, we are grateful that our virtual performances have allowed us to connect with broader audiences and increased access to composers and singers. The May 9 concert will include another chapter in that effort by including a short video montage of HCS singers sharing the joys and trials of singing virtually during the past year. \nMusically\, the May 9 program will present three pieces recorded this spring. Subsets of the choir will be featured\, including tenors and basses on “You Do Not Walk Alone” by Elaine Hangenberg. The listener will hear Celtic influence in her beautifully ethereal setting of this Irish blessing — music that the composer intends to “offer comfort in a time of uncertainty.” Then\, sopranos and altos will offer J. David Moore’s “Will the Circle Be Unbroken\,” an Appalachian folk song arrangement with bluegrass and Gospel elements. In recognition of Mother’s Day\, this piece will be dedicated to mothers and all people responsible for passing music down to younger generations. The concert will conclude with the entire choir singing “You Will Never Walk Alone” from the musical Carousel. The text and music capture a spirit of camaraderie in an ensemble that has “walked on” during the past year despite the challenge of rehearsing while distanced. It also highlights the optimism we have for the future. We’ve felt you\, our audience\, walking alongside us in support this year\, and we remain hopeful for a return to live performances this fall where we can express that gratitude in person.
