Audition Requirements and Singer information
Do you love music and singing? Do you want to be a part of something bigger than yourself?
You are invited to audition for the Hickory Choral Society!
New Singer Auditions are traditionally held in late spring and summer. Throughout the year, there may also be individually scheduled auditions by appointment. Email the HCS Office to be added to our Prospective Singer List to receive audition information when dates are determined. [email protected]
What to prepare for your audition:
SONG: Prepare and perform a 2-3 minute art song, folk song, or hymn of your choosing. You are not required to memorize your prepared selection.
A pianist will be available to singers who provide sheet music. You are also welcome to bring your own accompanist.
RANGE: One of our directors will vocalize you through a series of simple scale patterns to assess your range.
SIGHT READING: You will be given and asked to sightread a portion of a piece of choral music.
The conductor and associate conductor will listen to each audition and ask a few questions relevant to your singing experience and availability to fulfill ensemble attendance requirements.
What to expect when joining HCS:
REHEARSALS: The choir rehearses weekly on Monday nights, with additional rehearsals during the week of a concert.
COSTS: The choir has annual dues of $50 and an annual retreat (optional; dues are waived if a singer attends retreat).
ATTIRE: Singers wear a traditional tuxedo or performance shirt/skirt ordered through the HCS office.
FOLDERS AND MUSIC: Singers will use black choir folders for paper music or black tablet cases for tablets/ipads. Folders are available for purchase at the HCS office. Music is provided by the office at no cost to the singer, so long as music is returned after use.
EXPECTATIONS: All expectations are outlined in a Singer Handbook which will be provided to all new singers upon the completion of their audition.
While this information is provided to help prospective singers know what to expect upon joining our choir, it is our sincere hope that cost will never prevent participation in the Hickory Choral Society. Our Singer Support Fund is available to singers for whom cost may be a challenge.
